The Meaning of Relief

Listen to the legislature trumpet their efforts to bring RELIEF to their constituents. Relief is a comforting word and we all want it but I am not impressed when they are rushing to bring me relief at the expense of others. I don’t want an electric rate increase. I’d also like to see the price of gasoline go down but the last time that was mandated, the lines at gas stations stretched for miles.

CILCO went 25 years without a rate increase. It may not have been the best idea to try to make up for it all at once but there is no free lunch. Can it possibly make since that the legislature, who has allowed the dismemberment of one of the most reliable and inexpensive utilities in the country, would deregulate utilities in the name of free enterprise and then freeze their prices? Has anyone in the legislature ever taken Economics 101?

If they cared anything for their constituents we would see some tax relief. How about a fixed income tax, something simple you can respond to on a one-page form? Let me be a prophet – it will never happen. Politicians flourish in confusion. Government, state and national, has become a series of magic tricks – “pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.” Drugs, crime, terrorism, an incomprehensible tax system, and an avalanche of outrageous law suits – but wait; the legislature has just swung into action to give us relief. Are these guys great or what?
