The close presidential election in Florida confirmed that a large part of the Latino vote was trending Republican. It should surprise no one then that the race is on in congress to increase and capture that all important voting block.
Only half of the eligible voters in the U.S. are registered and only half of those registered vote. The large majority of those voting are bound to a specific political party so a very small percentage of the population calls the shots. Imagine what 11 million new votes could do.
I am aware of the Family Unification Act (circa 1986) and I too want to see families brought together – children born in the US, aliens who marry U.S. citizens – I can live with that and in fact, having met few Hispanics in or out of Mexico who weren’t very hard working, I welcome them and enjoy their comradeship but a wholesale waiver of the rules is another example of decaying national leadership.
Spanish is a beautiful language but any elected official that acts to move this country to two languages is a traitor to the planning and wisdom of our countries forefathers. When the Continental Congress voted to make English our national language instead of German, they knew that language could unify or split the country. English won by one vote. Had it been German, would we have backed England in World War One? I doubt it; London would be a German speaking town today had we not been an English speaking country. Our country is already divided yet there are those who push us toward an even greater inability to communicate.
